Semifinal #2: Brother Martin 48-Altus, OK 8
January 7th, 2014 | Written by: Editor

The second semifinal was close for the first six matches.  The Crusaders opened up a 9-3 lead via a fall by Travis Viener (the match started with the 195 lbs. weight class), a decision by Jacob Clapp and then a 1-0 loss by Matthew Montalbano.  Magdaleno Gomez brought Altus within three points with a decision over Daniel Varnado, but that was quickly erased by a major decision by Steven Shields, giving the Crusaders a 13-6 lead they would not give up.  Montorie Bridges followed that match with a major decision over Stephen Rumney, reducing the Brother Martin to three points at 13-10, but then the Crusaders rolled off eight victories in a row while Altus' points total actually went down twice due to misconduct violations.

Seth Johnson (BM) defeated Michael Abuam (ALT) TB-2 3-1
This match was not much to watch, and it ended rather ridiculously, but it turned out to be important.  Neither wrestler scored an offensive point.  Abuam let Johnson escape when he was on the top, and in the third period the match was tied 1-1 when Johnson was assessed a stalling point.  Neither wrestler scored in the Sudden Victory round.  In the first 30-second tie-breaker period Abuam was assessed two technical violation points, giving Johnson a 3-1 lead that the Altus wrestler could not overcome.  Hence, it was an ugly win, but a Crusader win nonetheless, and it was also the match that sealed the team victory for the Crusaders.

Pierce Williams (BM) pinned Austin Baldwin (ALT) in 4:44
Trouble started for Williams almost immediately in this match, in which he seemed out-gunned by Baldwin's mobility and strength.  Williams, though, refused to be pinned and when it was his turn on bottom in the third period, he caught Baldwin making a simple mistake, overriding, and Williams jumped on the opportunity with a basic arm roll.  Baldwin flipped to his back and Williams kept him there until he registered a fall.  Baldwin, understandably shell-shocked by the abrupt ending of a match in which he was in control, proved he is a young man of character by congratulating Williams right after the pin, and while still on his knees, prior to the required post-match handshake.
